It was so nice to gain elevation and get rid of that oppressive heat! Plus the views were wonderful too:

We pulled into the Monte Verde RV Park & Campground and got all set up for the next few days. Called Rhody and Barry and decided on having drinks at the Pub & Grub before heading over to the Angel Fire Country Club to eat at Elements. A fellow camper told me to go there as it was the best restaurant in the area. It had pretty good food. It was much better catching up with Rhody and Barry as we hadn’t seen each other in about six months. Over dinner we made plans for the next few days. Apparently there is a “golden circle” that takes one through many towns including Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Red River, Questa, Taos, and then back to Angel Fire. We thought that it would be fun to drive around the circle and explore.
First up was Eagle Nest. On the way there we stopped at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial which was created by Doc Westphall as a tribute to his son David and other Vietnam Veterans who were killed during the Vietnam War. There was a replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC:

A helicopter that we got to get next to:

A museum, an amphitheater, and a chapel:

From there we went to downtown Eagle Nest (about a block and a half) to have lunch at the Thai Angel Restaurant which was surprisingly really good.
Then we drove over to Red River to look around. We ended up at the Red River Brewery & Distillery for a drink on the veranda

before we had to run back to our coaches to take care of our doggies.
The following day we headed out towards Taos (the opposite direction than we took the day before). Taos is a much bigger town than Angel Fire, Eagle Nest or Red River and offered a lot for us to do. We walked around taking in the local art influences before we had lunch at the Alley Cantina. Great little place featuring green hatch chiles!

Great place with even better food!
We drove over to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge (yes, that Rio Grande)! Check out these pictures:

What a fantastic view! The gorge dropped some six hundred feet and you don’t see it driving down the road until you are up to the bridge. Very cool! I also learned that the Rio Grande starts way up in Colorado before becoming the border river between the United States and Mexico.
Back in Taos we stopped at The Social Club for a specialty drink. Really good!
For our last full day with the Hausauers, we decided to head back up to Red River and not completely go around the golden circle. We liked the reviews of a steakhouse called Texas Red’s so we went and tried it.

The steaks were fantastic!
We then walked around the town

before going back into Red River Brewing for a beer and jalapeño poppers (we espied them on our previous visit and they looked so good!

Back at the coaches we said our goodbyes to the Hausauers. The next morning we were on our way to Westminster, CO to park the Busse Bus at the Elks Lodge.
