We left Asheville and heading up to see friends, Jerry and Yolanda Davis, in Lexington, KY. We stayed at the WoodLog Covert on the northeast side of town which is out in horse country.

We really just needed a place where we could hook up the Busse Bus with electricity as we would be spending the next few evenings at the Davis’. Woodlog Covert was very remote and we were the only people staying there. On our way out of the Covert, we stopped at the trailer up near the road and purchased some eggs. We always try to support the Harvest Host that we stay with.

We made it to the Davis’ in time for dinner and spent the evening catching up on happenings from our last visit last year. As a bonus, Ron Dutton swung by to see us as well. Ron has become a friend of ours over the past few visits with the Davis’. I thoroughly enjoy seeing Jerry and having him educate me with his extensive bourbon bar.

He added more space and bourbons over the past year!

The next morning, Yolanda, Katrina and I went Buffalo Trace (BT) Distillery in Frankfort to see if we could catch a tour at 10:30am.

We were able to get on the tour and as a bonus, friends from the Myakka River Motorcoach Resort – Jeff & Molli Wills and Ron and Ruthie Sherman, were already scheduled for the tour.

All seven of us got to see BT and purchase some products. Unfortunately, the Wills and the Shermans had to run to another scheduled distillery tour before they got to the tastings portion. Good news for us is that we were able to sample their portions as well!

This was my favorite distillery to date! The grounds were amazing:

The tour showed us the processes used to distill bourbon:

An interesting aspect of the process that I learned was how much product evaporates over the aging process:

Another thing I learned at Buffalo Trace was the number of brands:

What a great experience!

We went over to Cliffside Diner to grab a burger for lunch.

Great little place with delicious burgers, a real greasy spoon kind of a place.

We spent the evening at the Davis’ again sampling bourbons and eating dinner.

We decided to spend the night in the coach as we were heading up to Louisville the next day to meet up with Ari, Matt and Keenan for the running of the roses.

I know nothing about bourbon or bourbon making but I know I would have enjoyed this too. That bourbon bar would be the envy of my Ryan!!!!
