We left Del Rio and headed to Kerrville and into the Texas Hill Country known as wine country. We stayed at the Buckhorn Lake Resort which offers lots for sale and wanted to see friends of ours (Kirt Warner and Pamela Mercer) whom we met at the Myakka River Motorcoach Resort earlier this year. We also had friends (John and Lynn Lodholz) staying there that we met during a stint in Nappanee. What a beautiful place!

As we were setting up, the Lodholz’s rode up on their bikes and we got to chatting for a few hours. After a couple of beers, we were able to finish setting up the coach and take Bear to the large dog park.

Buckhorn Lake Resort had nice pickleball courts where Katrina was able to join in on games every morning. My calf was still recovering so I decided not to annoy it anymore. Besides, I wanted to save my leg for hiking.

The next day Kirt and Pamela took us up to Fredicksburg (a quaint town in the wine country) for lunch at the Sozial Haus.

I had a good pizza, not deep dish, but good. Got a nice picture of the four of us:

Apparently, the town was founded by Germans way back when. We walked around the town a bit – lovely! We got thirsty and stopped at the Fredricksburg Brewery for a beer.

It really felt like we were in a German Biergarten. Fantastic!

On the drive home we stopped at the Augusta Vineyard:

What a beautiful place! The wine was good as well! I highly recommend this place.

The next day we headed out to lunch in downtown Kerrville at the Thai Ocha restaurant which is located right on the Guadalupe River.

Very tasty! I had the chicken Pad Thai.

We stopped on the side of the road when we saw these longhorns:

These cattle are huge! And their horns are very large and long. Hence their namesake, I guess.

Afterwards we drove up to Enchanted Rock to do some hiking:

What a wonderful state park! We hiked up the rock and then down a side and then around the rock. I thought that the most interesting formation was the huge rocks sliding off of the Enchanted Rock:

Luckily, I was able to stop one of the big ones!

Tired, we headed back to Buckhorn Lake and relaxed at their “casita”. I say casita, but it was much more of a house. Beautiful!

Since Pamela and Kirt were busy the next day, they told us to go to the Bending Branch Winery out near the town of Comfort. Once we drove into their parking lot the sign stated “reservations required”, so we called them and told them that we were there.

Lovely place in the country with good tasting wine! Because of COVID, they were not tasting all of their wines and only had three reds to try of a standard tasting of four. Therefore, we added a Rose. We ended up liking that one the best and purchased a bottle. Go figure!

We then went to downtown Comfort, which is very small, and found out that a lot of the stores were closed for good – COVID strikes again. There was a little pizza store that had ice cream so we stopped for a cone.

Upon arriving back at Buckhorn Lake, Katrina started a conversation with the London Aire (another Newmar coach) owners, Glen and Susan Hood from Waxahachie (TX) that were parked three site away.

After about an hour of discussion, it was getting towards the dinner hour so we asked them where we should go for dinner. They said that The Boat had excellent steaks. The four of us then went out to dinner!

Upon Susan’s recommendation I ordered the Mexican Margarita:

Spicy, salty rim with a fruity flavor and a candied straw! Mouth watering. I did order the garlic butter rib-eye steak that was wonderful! Katrina got two shrimp appetizers that were great as well! Great place where we were able to cement some new friends!

The next day we were off to see the Brown’s and stay on their ranch.
