So, on the day we were leaving the Hoots Rally in Spearfish we woke up to snow. Two days earlier it was 97 degrees. Crazy! “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”. Our original plan was to retrace our drive from Salt Lake City to Spearfish. After checking out our desired path we learned that parts of I-80 were closed due to the snow and wind. It might have been opened by they time we got there, but more snow was predicted in two days and could obstruct our way over the Rockies. We needed a new plan.

After looking at the weather maps, we decided to head north and go south of the Tetons and Jackson as they didn’t have snow. Off we went – this path added another 200 miles, but it was a better alternative for us to insure that we would be in the Salt Lake City area in time to meet Keenan’s plane.

Check out these travel pictures:

I know it doesn’t look like a lot of snow, but knowing we were heading into mountains, we were a bit concerned. We decided to travel longer than our normal and topped 400 miles in the first day. We drove through Thermopolis and grabbed this photo driving by:

The yellowy stuff are mineral deposits – just like at Yellowstone. Wild landscape!

Then we dropped into the Wind River valley and followed the river:

And my favorite:

Bear up on the dash “our dash hound” wishing we would stop so that he could play in the water!

We ended our drive in Dubois, WY and stayed at the KOA. All we did was plug into 50 amp electrically service as it was supposed to be cold overnight. At least Bear got to get out and meet some new friends:

We woke up to 10 degree weather. COLD! I tried to hook up the water, but the spigot was frozen. We had to continue our journey without additional water or emptying our sewer. Sure hope that it warms up.

Onward, up and over the Continental Divide to warmth (hopefully).

We did that drive through Thermopolis and the Wind River Canyon last year around Labor Day. Stayed at the KOA in Dubois, too. When we were there it was HOT. Safe travels.
