We left Pennsylvania and headed down to West Virginia where we stayed at the West Virginia State Fair Campgrounds in Lewisburg just outside of White Sulphur Springs.  There wasn’t an event going on at the fairgrounds so we pretty much had the place to ourselves:

I pulled out the Traeger and made up some sausages and grilled cauliflower – yum!

You might be asking yourself, “Why did they stay in Lewisburg, WV?”.  Well here’s the main reason:

No, not really.  We didn’t even know that it had such a prestigious accolade.  The Greenbrier Hotel is situated in White Sulphur Springs and it is a beautiful hotel.  On par with the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego that we had previously seen.  Check it out the outside and grounds:

And interior pictures:

Hidden within this hotel was a bunker for the United States House and Senate.  This bunker was built in the early 1960’s, during the Cold War, and outed in 1992 by a reporter.  So, for 30+ years this bunker was hidden in plain sight.  We took a tour of the bunker but no cameras and no phones were allowed, therefore no pictures – except for these that Kat got of the “vault” door:

You can see the heavy concrete/steel door on the big hinges.  In the photo that hangs next to it, you can see how they “hid” the door in plain sight.  Crazy that it was hidden for over three decades!

The area is also known for its Springs.  So we enjoyed a massage at The Salt Cave and Spa.

The place looked like Frodo or Bilbo should be meeting you at the door.

This picture is of the interior of the salt cave itself.

I didn’t get a picture of the massage itself ‘cuz I was nakey and you don’t want to see that!  However, we did great massages, but boy am I sore!

With this stop we were able to add the West Virginia sticker to the side of the Busse Bus.  We are now down to ten United States unseen!  We know we won’t get a chance to drive to Hawaii, so it’s really nine to go!  Off to check off one more, North Carolina.
