We drove down to the Boston area and stayed at Normandy Farm Campground in Foxboro, MA. This may be the nicest campground that we have ever stayed at! Very family friendly with a ton of activities that are planned all day long. Multiple pools – even an adult only pool and hot tub! They had an outstanding dog run area – it was a couple acres big.
We drove over to catch the train into town to see the historical sites. Boston is a wonderful city! We started at Fenway Park – the Sox weren’t playing but it was still fun to walk around the ballpark and stop at some of the bars:
My favorite bar was the Bleacher Bar:
Which is built under the bleachers and has window views onto the field. Very unique! The most unique part of the bar was the men’s room where you could see the field across the room through a window above the urinals:
Never have to miss a second of the game this way!
For lunch we went to Wahlburgers which was created by the three Wahlberg brothers (two of Hollywood fame – Mark and Donnie and one chef – Paul):
I gotta say that the burgers were quite tasty!
Continued our excursion by going down to the Boston Commons area and the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail is a three mile long path that winds through downtown Boston and passes by 16 locations significant to the history of the United States. It is mainly a bricked-in path and following it you can see graveyards, churches, notable buildings and a historic naval frigate. Each location has a marker explaining why the place is of historic significance. Very interesting to walk along and read about our history. During our trip we saw: the Boston Common, Massachusetts State House, Park Street Church, Granary Burying Ground, King’s Chapel, Benjamin Franklin Statue, Old Corner Bookstore, Old South Meeting House, Old State House, the Site of the Boston Massacre, and Faneuil Hall. Here are some pictures:
We made it as far as Faneuil Hall – not bad, 11 of the 16. There is a market at Faneuil Hall which we stopped at and looked around purchasing some vegetables. Watched a street performer before finding a cute little bar for a drink and a bowl of chowdah (chowder to y’all back in the bread basket of the United States). Fun day, but it was getting late and we had to figure out where to catch the train back out towards Foxboro.
The following day we went back into Boston to meet up with Lynn Joy who was coming to visit and be our guide at Cape Cod.
We met her at the Beantown Pub, ate lunch (fish tacos), had a drink and then went exploring again – this time on the Hop-On, Hop-Off trolleys. The trolley tour was very nice and we got to see much more of the Boston area with an explanation of each site along the way from the trolley driver. He was good, but had stupid jokes that we had to laugh at!
And, of course:
We didn’t get a chance to go in, but I’m pretty sure that they would not have known our names….
Numerous people told us that we had to attend the Saint Anthony Feast, which is an Italian festival. It was a street party on the North End:
There were three gals singing all dressed up in ‘70’s leather:
I gotta say – they were awful! Didn’t help that they were singing in Italian either.
Found a great little restaurant and found our way into the basement for a drink at the bar:
It was getting dark so we left and caught the fireworks on the way out:
We walked around a bit and found ourselves at the City Winery. We learned that there are multiple City Wineries with one in Chicago. Never heard of them before! Wine bar up front with food and a stage in the back:
Since there was a cover charge and only about half an hour left to the performance we sat down at the bar and ordered wine and appetizers. I had the meatballs which were excellent!
We found the correct train home and turned in as tomorrow we will be heading to Cape Cod and our tour guide, Lynn (a.k.a. Julie) we be showing us around. Actually, we will be on:

Looks like you hit all the highlights. That is not the original Cheers so you didn’t miss anything. The Feast of St Anthony was one of my favorite summer activities.

We really enjoyed Boston. We never spend enough time at each place.
