The 50th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede – is called the greatest outdoor show on earth.  It is a huge county fair on steroids western style.  Food, games, stages, exhibits, and races.  We witnessed “chuck wagon” races.  I know it sounds very foreign to us, but the winner takes home 1.1 million CAD, so really about $850,000 USD.  Not bad for driving a cart pulled by four horses.

I had a chicken donair for dinner and thought I was back in Munchen, DE and black ice cream for dessert.  It tasted like vanilla.  The show included singers, a magician, the roller bladers from last season on America’s Got Talent and Eddie the Eagle from Calgary Olympics fame.  One of the most famous singer/songwriters from Canada (no, not the Bare Naked Ladies) but, Andy Kim himself.  Come on fans, you remember “Sugar, sugar” and “Rock Me Gently”.

The festivities ended with fireworks once it got dark enough around 11:15pm.  We are moving into the land of the midnight sun for sure.  We took the local metro back towards our car and got back to the campground around 1:00am.  The next day drive to Edmonton was going to be a long one…
