After leaving Lexington we headed up to Sandusky, OH and stayed at the aptly named Sandusky RV Resort.

A nice place with a pool but since we were there after the summer season it was a bit deserted. Some of the people that were there decorated for Halloween. Here’s an example:

The reason that we wanted to go to this area was that there is an island in Lake Erie called Put-In-Bay that we had heard about and wanted to visit. It is nicknamed “Key West of the North” because in season it is packed with college kids and the party is on.

We took the ferry over to the island (we didn’t bring the coach, the truck, or bikes for that matter) and then realized that this dock was on the south side of the rock and we needed to be on the north side.

We could take the bus, Uber or rent a golf cart for the day. We opted for the golf cart.

We went straight to the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.

A large Greek Doric column (those six years of Architectural schooling real pays off) that is a monument to the War of 1812 where the Battle of Lake Erie was fought close by. Here’s the views from the top:

Perry was successful over the British fleet on the lake and hence the memorial.

We tried to eat lunch at The Boardwalk

but it was closed during the week so we went to Topsy Turvey’s Bar and Grill instead.

The lunch was good and quiet.

From there we did a little shopping in the stores that were open and also stopped at the Put-in-Bay Winery for a tasting.

It was nice sitting on their deck, but our palettes didn’t appreciate the samples so we didn’t purchase any bottles.

We stopped at Joe’s Bar for a drink and to kill some time. They had a Biergarten:

It turned out to be a nice place and we sat at the outdoor bar.

From there we went to the South Bass Island State Park to get pictures of the Put-In-Bay sign.

Back to the golf cart rental place and onto the ferry. We actually made the earlier ferry than we anticipated which gave us time to hit the Port Clinton Elks Lodge #1718.

Since we didn’t think that we were going to an Elks lodge I didn’t bring my membership card along. We quickly sat at the bar and made friends with the guy sitting next to us so that when the barkeep asked for our card our new buddy vouched for us. Aren’t Elks wonderful? We ordered a pizza and enjoyed it with a drink before heading back to the Busse Bus II.

Up and out the following morning heading to Blue Lake again.
