We left the Continental Divide and continued to head south without a real destination in mind. It was an interesting drive and I’m glad that we had given ourselves time to meander. First off we drove to Nugget City (really not a city) on the ALCAN heading to the Cassiar Highway (highway is a term that I would not have used for the glamorous mule path). On the way to Nugget City, we espied two black bears, a cinnamon bear, a black wolf, two red foxes before stopping for diesel.

Unfortunately, the gas station would not accept our credit card nor the locals’ who tried it afterwards. Luckily there was another gas station just down the street. Tried to get diesel there but the attendant told us that they had been out of power for the past 16 hours. We decided to head down to Dease Lake – the next gas station located about three hours away and near one of the campgrounds we were eyeing. After filling up with expensive diesel and since it was still early we decided to push on until we needed to stop at a wayside to set up Starlink so Katrina could make a call.

Cell coverage was non-existent along this road. The stop was nice as I was able to let Bear play in the nearby creek:

After the call we decided to push on down to Bell 2 for the night. On the way there our “Low DEF Level” light came on. No big deal as we had a spare in the bed of the truck. The problem was that our truck was dead after three days of towing without starting it up. That meant that we could not access the bed of the truck to get at the DEF. We pulled into Bell 2 and they informed us that they don’t have a campground, only the hotel and gas station. We purchased another spare of DEF (expensive here, but we weren’t sure we could get into the truck’s bed) and asked if someone could jump us. After getting the truck running, we added both spare DEF’s to the tank and we were on our way to a rest area about a mile down the road.

Boy, were we glad we decided to stop for the night – check out the views:

Up early the following morning to continue our trek south. I’m not sure if we got up early because we were excited to move along or was it due to the whirling sounds coming from the trucks as they passed by. So much for a peaceful morning!
