First of all “Happy Father’s Day” to all the dads out there!
We had a fairly uneventful five hour drive from Watson Lake to Whitehorse only seeing a couple of bears:
A red fox in the downtown area.
We camped at the Hi Country RV Park. We weren’t parked next to each other this time and each site was very tight.
We stayed there for two nights.
After getting set up we headed out for dinner at some joint downtown – we didn’t know exactly where so we drove around a bit until we found 506 All Day Grill. The place had a BBQ Grill going outside and the food smelled terrific. We sat outside because it was around 70 degrees and ordered up some chicken on the barbie. Very good!
We got a later start the next day which was fantastic to lounge around in the morning. Once we got going we headed over to Miles Canyon to see the Yukon River pass through the gorge.
We also got to cross the suspension bridge.
While we were there we got to see a Golden Eagle up close:
It was huge! Beautiful!
From there we went to see the SS Klondike, a paddle boat that used to traverse the river back in the early 1900’s. Amazing how that boat could get through the gorge. It was used to transport supplies up and down the river.
Unfortunately the exhibit is under renovation so we didn’t get to go inside. The ranger told us that the updates would be completed in four or five years!
We did however go inside the Visitor’s Center where there was a huge map on the floor. I’m standing on Inuvik, NT (on the Arctic Ocean where we will be in a couple of days), Molli is on Tok, AK (where we are going after the Arctic Ocean), and Jeff is pointing to Watson Lake (where we were a couple of days ago).
Since we were hungry, we headed into town to try out a brewpub that we had heard about called Woodcutter’s Blanket – closed on Mondays! Next attempt, Yukon Brewing – no cars and didn’t look open. We heard that Whiskey Jacks Pub and Grill was good so off we went. Closed for siesta time? Next attempt was Bib Bear Eatery & Taphouse – success! We were really hangry by this time and ordered up some food pronto.
The food was excellent!
Early back to our coaches to prepare for a long drive in the morrow.
