After along drive on two lanes roads we got into our campground Ash Riviera Resort. A very quaint place:
Not knowing much about Voyageurs National Park
we decided to rent a pontoon boat from Ash-Ka-Nam Resort just down the street for the next day in order to see the sights from the water. Apparently Voyageurs is a great place to boat and fish. We learned that the thing to do is rent a houseboat as there are “campsites” that you can rent on various islands. Sounds like fun, but we could only get the boat for the morning so we had to get up early and get out on the water while it was still very chilly. Here’s our pontoon:
They say beggars can’t be choosers – so true! At least it was water tight. Ron, from the place we rented the gem from, told us to go up to Kettle Falls where you can see the falls and get a drink/food at the hotel there. Off we went and on the way we saw:
In the second picture that is Canada on the right and the good ole USA on the left. Beautiful scenery – water, trees and rocks. It’s nice to be on the water without seeing people’s houses on every square inch. Bear loved the ride!
Kettle Falls is now dammed, but the swirling water beneath the dam shows the “kettles boiling”.
We checked out the “hotel” and the bar but decided not to stay and moved along. See the picture of the bar:
Notice the warped floor? You may have to zoom in – look at how the pool table is leveled. I’d hate to tie one on here and try to walk across the floor. Katrina talked to one of the workers and the hotel was not built on a foundation. In the 1980’s they shored up the building but decided to leave the bar as it was because everyone loved the uniqueness.
From there we motored to the Ellsworth Rock Garden. The garden was built in the 1940’s by one man from Chicago, Ellsworth.
Interesting rock formations that would be absolutely beautiful when the flowers bloomed. We didn’t stay there long for two reasons: 1) we had to get the pontoon back, and 2) the deer flies were attacking us like we were honeydipped.
We got the boat back in time and decided to chill for the rest of the day.
Here’s a picture of us with the Voyageurs National Park sign in the background from the water:
Another National Park under our belt, time to move on. Heading south into Wisconsin for more adventures.
