While Hurricane Ian was plummeting our little slice of heaven on the west coast of Florida we were mostly safe and sound on the east coast. My brother-in-law Steve Schroeder, who was checking on his house in Punta Gorda, drove over to stay with us and stay safe. It’s nice to have a traveling home were you can pick up and move easily when weather is foreboding. Our time riding out the storm was great as our friends, Rhody and Barry Hausauer live in Palm Beach and had us over for dinner.

Jen Drahan, whom we met in Lexington, KY at Jerry and Yolanda’s met us there as well. Their kindness was very much appreciated as we were worried about what was happening back at our home. They made dinner reservations for all of us at the Palm Beach Grill – a wonderful place with outstanding food.

After Ian passed, Steve decided to drive back over to Punta Gorda and see the damage to their house. We waited another day because other MRMR folks who were staying nearby left and they reported back to us what supplies were needed to address any issues they found at MRMR. We knew that the stores, supplies and gas would be hard to get anywhere near ground zero. We got their wish list and headed over to The Home Depot purchasing rakes, portable ACs, dehumidifiers, gas tanks, fans, tarps, water, hammers, nails, rags, rope, etc. We packed our truck full of these needed items and headed back to MRMR.

After a slow drive across the state seeing lines at gas stations we stopped and filled up our diesel tank. It was a good thing to have diesel because the line for gas was about 40 cars deep. We continued west seeing hurricane damage such as standing water, roofs torn off, stoplights not working, signs gone, trees uprooted, and so on. As we inched closer to our winter home we became more and more worried on what we would find….
