We wanted to make sure that Myakka was the right choice for us, so we continued reviewing motorcoach resorts that we already had booked.
We went to Pelican Lake in south Naples (only 15 minutes to Marco Island) and discovered that this place is beautiful! Established resort with mature landscaping.
While we were walking Bear and looking at the sites, a nice couple invited us to Gordon’s for happy hour and to listen to some music. Gordon owns a lot and has built an exterior bar where in invites anyone at the resort to swing by for happy hour (4pm daily). Once a week he also hires a guy to sing. What a great guy!
Here’s the real interesting part – the guy singing was Billy Bridget! The same singer that played on our dinner cruise out of Kingston, CA to view 1,000 islands!
This is the guy who donned a wig, bandana and nose clip to play Willie, and an Elvis mask up on the boat over the past summer. It’s a small world (but I’d hate to paint it)!
The following evening the resort was having a tiki party! Bring your own drinks, get your meal at the food truck and listen to some music. We were in! Music was good and people were dancing. We decided to get some food and waited in line for about one hour! Finally got our plates and headed back over to the tiki hut, just in time for everyone to leave as the no-see-ums were coming out. Great fun ;). Can’t always hit a home run. While waiting in line we ran into Jersey Joe, a guy that we had met in Syracuse. He’s the one in the little round boat pictured above. We also started talking with the young guy in front of us – he had to be about 25-30 years old. Asked him if he owned a lot here, he said “no, but my lady friend does”. “She’s twice my age and after her husband died we met on-line gaming”. Apparently, we just met a guy with a sugar momma. Asked him how the weather was here in the summer and he said “I don’t know, we spend the summers in the south of France”. Really?
We met up with friends of ours from Libertyville who own Austin’s – Lia and Mark Khayat.
It was so nice to catch up with them, if only for a quick visit.
Our assessment of this resort was: 1) beautiful, mature and large sites, 2) expensive, 3) great location – close to the Gulf, 4) not a lot of activities, 5) older crowd, and 6) too hoity toity for us. That means that Myakka is still our number 1 at the moment and we have a few more days to cancel Golden Palms if desired. We still have more places booked and to review, so we continued on.
