We left the Walmart parking lot in Sudbury and headed up to the Muskoka Lakes Cranberry Farm & Winery which is a Harvest Host location. Parked next to the cranberry fields:
Wonderful location overlooking the cranberries. Although, the horseflies were terrible! Swatting every time we went outside so we tried to coax Bear to poop quickly. We didn’t know how cranberries were grown nor harvested so we signed up for the tour and tasting. If you look at the fields next to our coach you can see the elevated portion – that’s where they grow the cranberries. At harvest time, they flood the fields because cranberries float and it is much easier to pick them – think Ocean Spray commercial! The tour and history of the farm were very informative, but the best part was tasting the different juices, wines, and spritzers that they make.
Kat and I ordered a charcuterie platter and a panini for a light lunch.
While eating two women, Michelle and Yota, sat down next to us and Kat struck up a conversation with them. Apparently, Michelle had a summer cottage on a nearby lake and asked us if we were going to the Alan Doyle concert tonight at “The Kee”? We said no, and they stated that we needed to as Alan is a famous singer from Newfoundland. We gave them our traveling card so that they could follow our adventures.
A few hours later we got a text from Michelle stating that there was still a couple of tickets available at a local store in Bala if we were interested.
We came to learn that Bala is “The Hamptons of Toronto”, very nice area!
Kat and I drove to the store and while there a different couple asked us if we were going to see Alan Doyle. Apparently they had just seen him in Toronto and were here to see him again. They said that we would know his music. We bought the tickets and texted Michelle back that we were going. She invited us to her cottage for pre-gaming.
Found their cottage and met their families while having dessert and drinks.
Michelle was married to Darryl, Yota and her husband Derek and their friend, Tequila Tom – aptly named as he gave everyone shots of the liquor. We were able to walk over to “The Kee to Bala” and got to see Alan. We had a great time! Alan was very good and a lot of fun.
The “Kee” is a fantastic venue. The whole floor was rocking as people danced to his songs. Since Kat and I didn’t know the music we just sat back and enjoyed the show and watched the people.
After the performance, we walked back to their cottage and had another drink by the campfire. What a lovely evening!
I would say that Alan Doyle, the famous Newfoundlander performer, is the Jimmy Buffet of the North!
Big shout out to Michelle and the entire gang for inviting us along on their planned evening out!
