Stayed at the Austin East KOA which resides, you guessed it, the east side of Austin.  It’s amazing how I can figure these things out.  The KOA was a nice place and the gathering room was great:

It was located down the street from the Austin Rodeo fairgrounds and across the street from the Walter E. Long Lake and Indiangrass Wildfire Sanctuary.

We had dinner at a very unique restaurant called the “Odd Duck” which served tapas style food.  The Odd Duck used to be a food truck that now is sticks and bricks.  Here’s what we had: Kale salad, roasted sweet potatoes, pretzel chorizo-spiced mushrooms, broccoli piping nachos, and antelope tataki.  I know, strange but good.  One dish that we were a bit afraid of was the Chicken fried fish head.  Luckily they were out of it on the night that we visited – made our decision easier.  No.

Cute place located on Commerce Street.  It’s the up-and-coming area of Austin once you outgrow Sixth Street.

We were able to have dinner with Tiffany and Brit Reid at a sushi place.  Unfortunately, the highly recommended one was so busy we headed out to another larger chain.  Tiffany worked at BeautiControl when Kat was there.  She was able to stop by the Busse Bus prior to dinner:

Those blocks have sure come in handy.  Kat was right in bringing them along!

Kat and I did have to check out Sixth Street.  Bars and restaurants lining the street that reminded me of Rush Street in Chicago (at least back in the day) or Beale Street in Memphis or Bourbon Street in New Orleans.  Lots of activities, so much so that they close the street to traffic at 8pm.  After walking the street we ended up at B.D. Riley’s Irish Pub to listen to some music:

The gal playing on the electric harp was really good.  I didn’t know a harp could sound like that!  I only thought that they sounded like they should be played at an uppity brunch at a fancy hotel.

For dessert we headed to Voodoo Doughnut:

Fabulous large yummy donuts!

All-in-all we really enjoyed the vibe in Austin!  There was much more to discovery but we had to move on.  Next time.

Keep Austin Weird!  Not sure why this is saying is the unofficial motto of Austin, but it does have a unique feeling to it, much different from other Texan cities that we have visited thus far.

Ok, curiosity killed the cat so I just looked it up:

Keep Austin Weird is the slogan adopted by the Austin Independent Business Alliance to promote small businesses in Austin, Texas.

Now you know too.
