On our way from Sedona to Albuquerque (now that’s fun to type), we stopped to see the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest.  The Painted Desert is very nice and I’m sure a lot of the old cowboy movies used it as a backdrop during cattle drives or whatnot, but after seeing the true beauty in Sedona, it was hard for me to get all excited.  Don’t let me sway you, you be the judge:

See what I mean?  Pretty, but no Sedona…

The Petrified Forest on the other hand was extremely interesting to me.  This was a forest back when the dinosaurs ruled the land that got covered and the wood turned into stone and minerals.  Now I’m not a scientist so I can’t explain the process to you, but that’s what the internet is for.  If you are interested in the process, do a little digging.  All I can say is that when you see rock trees laying on their side and experience the beauty of the colors it is amazing.  Take a look:

Isn’t that really unbelievable?  The first time I saw this (must have been about eight years old) I didn’t get all the fuss, but now that I’m older and hopefully wiser, I got it.  Very cool!

Great stop on the way from Sedona to Albuquerque.  Learning moment, great pics and a chance to stretch your legs.
