One of the experiences that Keenan wanted to have in Alaska was to see a glacier. We booked an excursion aboard the Ptarmigan to sail to the Portage Glacier. What a site!
We were able to get in pretty close and see it up close. Heard and saw some calving but we weren’t able to capture on film. On the way to/from the glacier we were able to see numerous waterfalls:
Notice the silty colored water in the photo which is directly due to the melting of the glacier and the fine particles of rock in the water. After the boat ride, we were able to hike around on the “Trail of Blue Ice” from which you can see many glaciers. Hiked up to the Byron Glacier so that we could touch it:
The hike was hot but the ice was cold and somewhat refreshing!
Ari still wanted to see moose so we went over to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and saw:
We also saw porcupines, elk, and the elusive moose. Hard to take a picture of a moose in the corner of a stall – not terribly exciting, but at least Ari got to see one.
Our host of the excursion stopped along the drive to allow us to see other fun things, like drinkable water coming out of the side of the mountain from a pipe and seeing salmon swim up a little creek to spawn and die. Overall, an excellent day in Alaska!
