The Alaskan (Klondike) Gold Rush came about 40 years after the rush in California. Miners came by the droves to stake claims and make it rich but the majority didn’t. However many towns became established during this time for support systems and transportation hubs.
Katrina, Keenan and I went out to the Gold Dredge #8 to become rich beyond our wildest dreams.
Painstakingly; we scooped, and swooshed, and rattled and washed our pans seeking the big pay off. Once we got down to only the gold left in our pans we combined them into one vial and took it in to be weighed. Collectively our big payoff was $37.00. Not bad considering that we paid $29.00 each for the experience.
Included in the experience was a train ride and a close look at the Alaskan Pipeline. The pipeline is currently carrying about 600,000 gallons of crude oil a year to the southern port of Valdez. Very interesting piece of engineering to move oil across the state while crossing rivers, going through mountains all while in a potential earthquake zone.
Amazing how the vastness of Alaska can render gold riches and then black riches 80 years later. Beautiful state!
